Thank you for examining Melodia Professional for MIDI ("Melodia"). Melodia is an algorithmic composing program. It is an attempt to free musical artists from the tyranny of a tradition that grew out of the physical limitations of the medium, just as photography freed visual artists. It does not try to replace the traditional methods; but it does offer a completely new medium with new rules and with different strengths and limitations. You compose music by making connections to processes that are running in real time, by modifying the processes as you listen to the changes. You get interesting simple patterns almost instantly, and then step by step you can go on to develop the patterns into compositions of virtually unlimited complexity and subtlety. There are three documentation files that you should print: INTRO.TXT - brief overview and introduction to Melodia. TUTOR.TXT - step by step tutorial to get you started. MANUAL.TXT - full, in depth documentation of Melodia. Melodia also has online help: When you pass the mouse cursor over any active area of the screen (a command or control) with the right mouse button pressed, Melodia prints a message at the bottom of the screen telling you about it. Before running Melodia for the first time, you must first run the INSTALL program. This installs the working MP.EXE and subdirectories in place, in the same directory as INSTALL. This is done as part of the disk installation process, if you are installing from a disk. Melodia should work with any MPU401 type interface, including the partial implementations found on many sound cards. Additionally, the Key Electronics Serial MIDI interfaces are all supported, so you can use Melodia with your portable. This Unregistered version of Melodia is fully functional but somewhat less convenient than the Registered version because it does not allow you to erase files or create new files from within Melodia unless they are named "DEFAULT." You can use the DOS command line to manually rename or erase your work files without restriction, but if you are doing this, you are definitely ready to register. Note that when the tutorial indicates you should create a new file or rename the current workspace, you should ignore the instructions and select ERASE to erase DEFAULT and/or clear the workspace. Melodia is supplied as is. The author, John Dunn, disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the use of Melodia. Melodia is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but be sure to give only the full package (including this file) not altered in any way, and not as part of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find that you are using Melodia and continue to use Melodia after a reasonable trial period, you must make a registration payment of $79.00 to the author at the address given below. The $79.00 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it is being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time. Commercial and educational users of Melodia must register and pay for their copies of Melodia within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting the author at the address given below. Anyone distributing Melodia for any kind of remuneration must first contact the author at the address given below. You are encouraged to pass a copy of Melodia along to your friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that they can use it. All users who register will receive a copy of the latest Registered Version of Melodia by airmail. The registeration fee is $79.00 in US funds. You may register Melodia through CompuServe (GO SWREG, Reg ID: 2003, or Author: John Dunn), or you may pay with your MasterCard or Visa by calling toll free 1-800-900-3070, or you may send a check or money order to: Software Tools for Artists 718 SW Alton Circle Port St. Lucie, FL 34953 Email address for technical support or to contact the author: CompuServe: 73642,1721 (John Dunn) Internet: 73642.1721@CompuServe.com
